Vinegar is a common ingredient found in most kitchens. White vinegar is often used in both cooking and cleaning, but apple cider vinegar (ACV) can be just as versatile as its cousin in the kitchen.
In addition to cooking, ACV is also used in baking. ACV can add extra flavor and texture to baked goods and it is used by many as a common substitute for eggs in a recipe.
When using real eggs, adding a small amount of ACV to the water used to boil or poach eggs will give you better results. The ACV helps the eggs cook faster as the egg whites will firm up more quickly.
ACV can also be used as a natural produce cleaner. Rather than rinsing your fresh produce under running water, instead add them to a bowl filled with 1 cup water and 1 tablespoon of ACV. Let the produce sit for a few minutes, stirring frequently. Then remove the produce from the bowl and pat or air dry. Any dirt or pesticides will be washed away leaving clean produce behind.
If you're looking for a more natural, non-toxic way to clean surfaces in your kitchen or the rest of your home, use ACV to create a non-toxic cleaning spray by combining 1 cup of water with 1 cup of ACV. Optionally, you can also add 2-3 drops of an essential oil for a light, fresh scent of your choice.
Similarly, if you are looking for a non-toxic way to get rid of ants or keep other insects away from your kitchen, take equal parts ACV and water to create a homemade pesticide. Spray this mixture along door jambs, windowsills, foundation cracks, etc. to keep ants and insects away from your home.
Out of window cleaner? ACV can be used at full strength as substitute or alternative to traditional window cleaner. Spray and wash the windows as you normally would, and, once the windows have dried, simply wipe away any lingering streaks.
Having a water and ice dispenser in your refrigerator is a great asset to have, but it does often mean seeing white spots or circles appear in the drip tray. To remove these spots or any other hard water spots you might find around your sink or faucet, soak the drip tray or area in ACV to remove the buildup. The spots should wipe away easily after soaking for a few minutes.
These other uses for ACV area just a few of the ways ACV can be used in the home outside of cooking.
