Coffee has been the morning drink of choice for many for decades. And over the last several years, coffee and its related accessories have grown even more popular. As this interest grows, so does the interest in the way coffee tastes rather than simply as a jolt of caffeine to start the day. This growing interest also explains the rising popularity in the different ways coffee can be brewed from the traditional multi-pot to specialized espresso machines so you can recreate your favorite latte at home.

drip coffee maker

The classic way to make coffee is with a drip coffee maker or automatic coffee machine. Popular due to its ease of use and various size and style options, this type of coffee maker can brew anywhere from a single cup up to 14 cups at a time. Coffee made this way is made by adding cold water to the reservoir and ground coffee beans to the filter. Once the water heats up, it passes through the beans and the result is then dripped into the coffee pot sitting on the warming plate. Some of the newer drip models have a hot water dispenser or are compatible with single-cup pod brands. While this coffee maker can make a large amount of coffee, the coffee can burn if it is left on the warming plate for too long and any coffee made is limited to the pre-programmed settings on the machine.

pour over coffee maker

One of the simpler ways to make coffee, pour over coffee makers only require hot water, a paper filter, and a funnel. The paper filter goes inside the funnel and then the ground coffee beans are added. Hot water is added to the ground coffee in two or three batches. As the water makes its way through the grounds, the brewed coffee then drips into the cup or carafe sitting under the funnel. Although a gentler way to make coffee, it does take much longer than other methods. Like the drip coffee maker, pour-over coffee makers can be used to brew a single cup or several.

grind and brew coffee maker

Grind and brew coffee makers are an all-in-one coffee maker. These models can grind the coffee before brewing for the freshest flavor possible and can store coffee beans in the maker. Once the amount of coffee is chosen, the machine will automatically grind the corresponding amount of coffee beans before brewing the coffee. Some other types of coffee makers can have grinders attached but many do not. This type of coffee maker is good for those who prefer to grind their own coffee beans. The type of blade used in the grinder compartment can vary from model to model as some use blade grinders and others burr grinders. Because built-in grinders can jam, it's a good idea to clean this type of coffee maker regularly.

percolator coffee maker

Percolator coffee makers are great for anyone who enjoys really hot coffee in a hurry. While this type of coffee maker has existed for a long time, some coffee drinkers believe that the coffee is too hot and acquires a burnt taste due to the temperature. Percolator coffee maker can be electric or used on the stove. Hot water is run through a tube and repeatedly wets the coffee grounds located at the top of the machine. For stovetop models, this means it can also be difficult to maintain a consistent temperature.

single cup coffee maker

Made incredibly popular for its convenience and variety, single pot or single cup coffee maker are perfect for those who only want to make a single cup of coffee at a time or for those who don't have much time to wait while their coffee brews. Most of these single cup models have a water reservoir and therefore don't need to be filled with water before every use unlike other coffee makers. While the capsules or pods remove the necessity for coffee filters, buying them can become expensive over time as one pod only makes up one cup of coffee. The size of the cone cup, however, can vary from coffee mug-sized up to a large to-go cup size. These pods also may or may be recyclable, depending on the brand.

French press coffee maker

For coffee drinkers who prefer a richer taste or who would like to control how strong their coffee is, French press coffee maker are perfect. By adding coffee grounds with water that's just reached boiling to the carafe and adding the lid, users can control how long the coffee steeps for. The longer the coffee is steeped before pushing down on the plunger attached to the lid of the carafe which moves the grounds to the bottom, the stronger the flavor of the coffee will be. Because the French press doesn't generate the hot water, the coffee can cool down relatively quickly. Heating the carafe prior to adding the grounds and hot water should help the brewed coffee remain warm for a longer period.

cold brew coffee machine

Cold brew coffee became popular a few years ago. An easy, hands-off approach to making coffee, it is good for making large amounts at once. Because the coffee grounds are steeped in room temperature or cold water overnight, cold brew coffee has a fuller flavor than traditional iced coffee. This method does take longer however, as it can take up to 24 hours for the coffee to brew. The finished product can be served cold over ice or hot as a coffee concentrate and can be stored in a refrigerator for up to two weeks.

espresso machine

Anyone who enjoys espresso, lattes, cappuccinos, or other espresso-based drinks would benefit from owning an espresso machine. There can be a learning curve for this type of coffee maker but once worked out, it makes a consistent cup of espresso every time. Specific models can vary as some models need to heat up before being used and others come with a milk frother. The type of espresso machine (ranging from manual to fully automatic) also allows the user to decide how much work they have to put in to get a cup of espresso. Manual models allow for the most control and the user must do all the work while fully automatic models do everything, and users need only to select the type of drink they would like. Semi-automatic models control some elements while the user controls the rest.

Turkish coffee maker

Using a Turkish coffee maker is perhaps the simplest way to make coffee. Using a small pot with a spout on one side, ground coffee beans and water are placed together on the stove until they start to boil. Once this happens, the coffee is then poured into a cup where the grounds settle at the bottom. Similar to espresso in that the coffee produced is very strong, it is also usually enjoyed from a small cup. Spices, sugar, and other flavors can also be added to the pot during the brewing process. Because it is made on a stove, the coffee must be removed from the heat at the right time to prevent burning it. While primarily designed to heat coffee, this coffee maker can also heat other liquids.
