If you don't know the first thing about being in the kitchen, now is a great time to learn. Or, if you're a parent at home with middle or high school aged kids, now is a great opportunity to start teaching them the basics of cooking. For those who have never even boiled water before, this list of basics is a great place to start. While it doesn't cover everything, it does give you a foundation from where to start building your culinary skills. Being able to boil water can lead to making mac and cheese and then one pot pasta dishes, and so on.

  • Boiling water
  • Cracking an egg
  • Chopping an onion
  • Hard boil an egg
  • Thawing frozen meat

  • Reusing leftovers or repurposing leftover ingredients
