baking powder biscuits

An old TV show suggested "Father Knows Best", but when it comes to baking biscuits, it was mom who knew best.

Serves: 10-12 Difficulty Level: 1 (of 5) Prep Time: 10 Minutes Ready In:
INGREDIENTS:
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 3/4 cup milk
  PROCEDURE:
  • Combine all dry ingredient and blend well with whisk.
  • Cut in butter until resembles coarse bread crumbs.
  • Stir in milk until all comes together to form a dough ball.
  • Turn out dough ball onto a heavily floured surface
  • Let set for a couple of minutes and then knead for about a minute.
  • Re-flour the surface and pat out to about 1/2? thick.
  • Cut biscuits with floured biscuit cutter.  (That was my job.)
  • Place on an ungreased baking pan.  (If biscuits are placed touching one another, or "flirting", they rise higher.)
  • Form remaining dough into ball and repeat until all dough made into biscuits.
  • Bake in 425-450 degree oven for 12-15 minutes.

Time for plenty of butter and some home-made jam!
