Cutting boards come in many varieties but the two basic ones are wood and plastic. Care and maintenance for each one depends on the material used. Wood cutting board requires coating the board in mineral oil which acts as a sealant to prevent bacteria from forming. Avoid submerging in water, store in a dry place, brush it clean, and avoid bleach. A plastic cutting board has to have warm soapy water to clean it and should avoid the dishwasher. There are four steps to caring for a wooden cutting board.
Here are the four steps for maintaining a wooden cutting board:
1.First step in caring for a board is scraping after each use with a steel spatula or scraper. It will remove moisture buildup and keep it from cracking.
2.Second step is to clean your board promptly and fill the sink with soapy water.
3.Third step is to remove stains with coarse salt. Leave it there for about five minutes and scrub with a damp sponge.
4.Fourth step is to sanitize it after cutting meat by spraying with undiluted white vinegar. Let the vinegar sit for a few minutes.
A plastic cutting board is required to clean with warm soapy water. Most ones are nonporous which means bacteria will not go inside the board. They are more stain resistant and need to avoid the dishwasher because it will cause it to warp. The board should be stored in a dry place in an upright position to prevent retention of moisture and buildup of bacteria. The board should use only soapy water to clean it and be stored in a dry place.
