Camping is a great way to temporarily disconnect from work, technology, and just overall get away from your usual routine. It can be relaxing and peaceful or rigorous and full of adventure. Regardless of how you spend your days while camping, everyone needs to eat. Thankfully, the food and tools available to cook the food have all improved greatly over the years. No need to only eat jerky or spit roast a rabbit--unless you want to. Nowadays, hobos are popular and grits or eggs and bacon are considered normal breakfast camp fare. This is, in part, thanks to portable cooking products like the ones in this post.

For example, a pre-seasoned Dutch oven can make a huge difference in your camping trip by giving you a durable, versatile pot to cook in that can feed everyone at once. With three short legs and a handle, this Dutch oven can be either placed directly in the fire or hung above it by a tri-pod designed to suspend a pot or Dutch oven above the fire for slow, even cooking. This set-up is great if you plan on having the same campground for the entirety of your trip.

If you don't have much space or are planning on hiking and camping out in a new area each night, hooking a cast iron skillet from your gear is an easy, more portable way to go. It allows you to cook food with ease over the fire without taking up extra space or effort. A pair of tongs are another super portable, helpful kitchen tool. Use them to turn over hobos in the fire, meat in the skillet, or even picking up miscellaneous gear or trash along your way. These tongs are also dishwasher safe so when you do get home, you can pop them in the dishwasher and know they'll be squeaky clean in no time.

This last piece of camping gear may serve you just as well before your camping trip as on your trip. A cookbook isn't generally something that's considered essential for camping, but this cookbook is a step by step primer on outdoor cooking. Flip through it for ideas before you go shopping or bring it with you for your first outdoor cooking experience.

Now you're prepared for your next camping excursion!
