We at JES are happy to introduce Annette our newest addition to our web department. As content writer; Annette will be writing many of the new blogs coming up as well as the many product descriptions for the products being added everyday to JESRestaurantEquipment.com. Welcome Annette!    – Jarrett

My first blog assignment here at J.E.S Restaurant Equipment is on ice machines.  I’m no novice to the subject at hand.  I recently repaired an ice maker that wasn’t producing any ice at all.  I flipped on the power switch.  My mechanical skills are unparalleled.   I’m also aware of the need to always purchase two scoops.  The second one is needed to rescue the first one, which will invariably have suicidal tendencies and prefer to rest at the bottom of a full ice bin.  I suspect that my comprehensive grasp of ice making is the reason I was hired.  (I AM NOT a part of our knowledgeable sales staff, which is more than happy to both assist you and steer you away from me.)   Still, I found myself wondering about a few things when I was asked to write this blog.

I did my research on Ice-O-Matic.  Founded in 1952, they are the oldest manufacturer of ice makers in the US, and leaders in the industry.  In researching ice making, I was given a crash education in environmental issues and global warming, so the first truly impressive thing I noticed about Ice-O-Matic is that they use the newer, greener, refrigerants.  I like that they care about the environment, because I do as well.  Being the naturally nosey type, I also learned that they care about human rights, and have actually signed and posted an anti-human trafficking contract on their web site.  That’s progressive.

The Facts

Now about ice…turns out that there are four basic styles of ice being produced by machine, each with a different purpose, and Ice-O-Matic has high quality ice makers to produce them all.

  • CUBED ICE – Sturdy, melts slowly, great multi-purpose ice
  • FLAKE ICE – Made with all or partial salt water, used for storing and preserving fish, fruits and vegetables.  Also has medical applications.
  • GOURMET ICE – It’s PRETTY!  Seriously, the designer shape lends itself to more elegant functions and upscale dining.
  • PEARL ICE – Wonderfully thin, crunchy ice that melts slowly but also allows you to munch on ice at the bottom of your drink. Ice-O-Matic holds the patent on this one.

I know more about ice, and ice makers now, but the biggest thing I learned was that Ice-O-Matic knows enough about both, and technology, and the environment, and other serious Scrabble-worthy words, for me to trust them.
