A quick one:
Salad spinners are a great way to clean and dry your lettuce in one container. Because these appliances use centrifugal force, they are a much more efficient and effective way to prepare leafy greens. Rather than using a bowl of water and paper towels, which can leave your leaves still wet, a salad spinner gets rid of dirt and excess water. A salad spinner consists of three main parts. The outer bowl, the inner bowl, and the lid with the handle. The outer bowl is what collects the water and dirt from the lettuce. The inner bowl is where the greens go, and the lid keeps water from splashing out and the built in handle moves the inner bowl to clean the lettuce.
These devices are really simple to use. First, break up the lettuce, spinach, or other greens into bite size pieces. It’s easier for the spinner to clean each piece if they are in a more manageable size. Then add the lettuce to the inner bowl and place it in the outer bowl. Fill the bowls up with water until the leaves are just covered. Be sure to use cold water as warm water will wilt the leaves. Place the lid securely and turn the handle vigorously for about 10 to 15 seconds. Then, drain the dirty water out. Keep the lettuce in the bowl and then turn the handle again for another 10 to 15 seconds to rinse off the excess water. When you’re done, you should have clean, and dry lettuce ready for a delicious salad.
