Consider growing
lettuce indoors in the winter months. There are a number of miniature
varieties that are suitable. Plant the seeds in two parts potting soil
with one part vermiculite. Seeds should be planted according to the
directions on the package and kept cool and moist until they sprout.
Plant dwarf varieties about 4-5 inches apart. If you leave the root in
the soil and undamaged the plants will continue to send up fresh leaves after
each picking.
This made a very good
project for the kids in the Clark household during those long, dismal days
of winter in Western New York, and they got to eat the fruits of their labor.
