Too salty? You can dilute the saltiness of soups or very liquid dishes by adding more of a saltless ingredient like water, pasta, or vegetables. When you can't dilute or add extra ingredients to a liquid dish, toss in a peeled, quartered raw potato and simmer 10 to 15 minutes. Then discard the potato along with the salt is has absorbed.

A good way to prevent this from happening is to be aware of any saltiness in your ingredient list. A classic example is Parmesan cheese. It is rather salty by nature, so if it is on your ingredient list, take note. Other precautions would include the use of unsalted butter and using a coarse or Kosher salt. These salts are easier to measure and not as salty as table salt. It should go without saying that you should also "taste as you go" to prevent over salting.
