Throughout the month we have been post tips on our Twitter account to help you when it gets time to carve the pumpkin this year for the Halloween holiday. Now that it’s so close to the holiday, here’s a look back at some of the best tips.
The first thing you’ll need to do when sitting down to carve your perfect pumpkin will be to select your carving tools. For best control you’ll need a sharp blade that ends in a point – a paring knife will generally be your best options. For larger cuts, like the top of the pumpkin a sharp chefs knife will work best.
There are lots of online patterns available if you want to go with specific design, or you can free-hand for creative cuts.
Selecting a Pumpkin: The bigger the pumpkin the more space you will have available, look for ones with flat sides that are less likly to roll. But be sure to select an unbruised pumpkin, looking for any discoloration or soft spots. Strong stims are also a sign of a health pumpkin that’s ready to be carved.
Use slow careful cuts while carving to available any mistakes. Short saw-like movements will work best. But if a mistake does happen you can still fix the problem with a toothpicks. Place one or two toothpicks into any area that breaks off, carefully pushing them in so the final design is just how you want it.
Preserving your carving: There are may ways to go about keeping your pumpkin looking great throughout the month. Keeping the pumpkin moist will stop it from drying out – use a plant mister or spray bottle for best results. You can also mix a small amount of unscented bleach into the water to avoid mold.
