Now, there is one word that has been used since we have been in NOLA, and that is walking. I feel that we can have all this nice food because we walk to get it. Since our first stop at Grits and Groceries, and our breakfast with Heidi and Joe, and knowing Heidi had worked at Elizabeth's, I googled best breakfast in NOLA and Elizabeth's came up almost 2 miles away. Hey Viv, we gettin a cab this morning! Driving up to Elizabeth's, I look at Viv and think maybe not. Never the ones to back down, and rarely the ones to back up, we head in.
All looks good. There are paintings on the wall, a nice atmosphere and a great smell coming out of the kitchen. Good decision so far. Looking at the menu, I think yep, this is my kind of place. I order the country breakfast, which consists of 2 smoked pork chops, covered with sausage gravy, 2 eggs over easy, grits and a biscuit, OJ and coffee. I just had to get a side of praline bacon to split with Viv, who gets the Eggs Elizabeth, French bread, ham, poached eggs and Hollandaise sauce. I think I saw some potatoes in there also. I noticed one thing that stuck out on the sign. It read “Real Food Done Real Good”. Now where have I heard that before? Grits and Groceries!
Chef Bryon Peck says in his mission statement, and I quote “ ‘Real Food Done Real Good’ was a slogan that was brought to Elizabeth's with the first owner Heidi Trull. I really liked this slogan and decided to keep it. My personal mission was to make everything from scratch.” You can read about Elizabeth's at www.elizabethsrestaurantnola.com. Heidi, all I can say is they are still representing the name and mission very well. In fact, this was one of the best meals I have had since I left home. So never judge a book by its cover. Open it up and enjoy. In this world of fast food and drive thru stuff, it is great to have chefs like Heidi and Bryon who can make us appreciate their talent and passion for Real Food Done Real Good. Hey Viv, let's get a cab back!!
