St Patrick's Day is coming up and with it comes an explosion of green. Green clothing, green food, and shamrocks everywhere. If you want to get in on the green fun without breaking the bank on the day of, turn your drinks green at home. Making your celebratory beer green is easily done by adding a few drops of green food coloring to your glass. It should be noted however, that the color-change is more noticeable with lighter beers than darker brews like the traditional Guinness. Using liquid food coloring over a gel or paste also makes the process easier.

If your're not a beer drinker, there's still plenty of options for a festive-looking drink. Below are two non-beer options--green margaritas and "pot-o-gold" mimosas. Happy St Patrick's Day!

Green Margaritas

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup salt

  • Limes for garnish
Directions:
  1. Mix together the tequila, melon liqueur, triple sec, and lime juice in a large glass or cocktail shaker
  2. If you would like to make green salt for the rim of the glass, mix together the salt and around 10 drops of food coloring in a ziplock bag. Shake and knead the salt in the bag to evenly distribute the color. Add more food coloring as needed until all the salt is colored and your desired shade of green.
  3. Pour the salt into a shallow bowl or plate and let dry. Rub the rim of the glass with a lime wedge, then dip the glass into the salt to coat the rim.
  4. Fill the glass with ice and add the mix from the larger glass.
  5. Garnish with a lime wedge and a straw if desired.
