someone carving a turkey

Thanksgiving is all about the turkey. There are several ways to cook a Thanksgiving turkey--deep fry, roast, brine, smoke, etc.--but without any seasoning, most cooking methods will result in a bland tasting turkey. A rub is a great way to season a turkey before cooking as it is quick and simple to throw together. With Thanksgiving gatherings likely to be smaller this year, this rub is particularly good because is can be used to season a whole turkey or a smaller cut of meat like a turkey breast and can be applied as a dry or wet rub. To make it a wet rub, just add 2 tablespoons of olive oil or melted butter.

Ingredients:
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon kosher salt
  • 1-1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1-1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon dried sage
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
Directions:
  1. Add all the ingredients to a small bowl. Stir until all ingredients have combined. If making a wet rub, add 2 tablespoons of olive oil or melted butter to the mix and stir.
  2. Rub the mixture all over the turkey (and under the skin if seasoning a whole bird).
  3. Cook as desired.
