As restaurants and other businesses begin to consider reopening, protecting employees and customers alike is of utmost importance. Social distancing rules will likely still apply but there are additional steps restaurants can take to further protect everyone involved.
For positions that have constant, direct interactions with customers such as cashiers or bank tellers, installing a cashier shield or safety shield provides a clear barrier between employee and customer. This barrier would still allow for communication and transactions to take place while providing a more solid layer of protection for those who must partake in close contact with others. These shields are available in different sizes and can come as a single, solid shield or with cutouts for money or other small transactions.
Providing masks and nitrile gloves for employees to use during their shifts can go a long way in making employees and customers alike to feel more comfortable with entering a place of business as more areas begin to reopen stores. In addition to requiring employees to wear masks and gloves, implementing new measures such as monitoring temperatures and sending home any employees who are ill or have a fever, requiring more frequent hand washing while working, and introducing a more stringent cleaning routine are other ways that restaurants can further protect both employees and customers.
With the closure of virtually all dine-in eating and the rise in take-out and delivery, restaurants should have a steady supply of disposable cutlery, cups, containers, etc. Being able to continue to provide these options even as restrictions slowly ease for restaurants can help diners feel more comfortable with beginning to dine out again since the disposable items are one use only. Another option for restaurants would be to begin using Microban dinnerware once they have reopened and can offer dine-in service again. This dinnerware is specially designed support a 99.9% cleaner surface and is effective against a broad range of bacteria.
Other items such as hand sanitizer stands, hand washing reminder signs, and crowd control stands and retractable belts to help enforce social distancing might also be useful to implement as more stores reopen and restrictions are relaxed.
